William Sergeant Ruby

     William Sergeant Ruby was born on 28 January 1877 in Ballarat East, Victoria. He was the son of George Ruby and Sarah Evans.
     He began work at his father's drapery then learnt the printing trade. He was a draper and general store keeper until his health broke down and he went on the land. He had drapery shops at Collingwood, Outrim & Dalyston. He farmed at Gunyah Gunyah until he was burnt out, Lance Creek, Powlett River, North Wonthaggi and Bolinda, then lived in Melbourne for 3 years from where he worked his properties at Mt Eccles and Strzlecki. He exchanged these 2 properties for properties at Koyuga where he shifted. He then exchanged these for Foster & Amey's track. He purchased Parwin which he later exchanged with M Cock for "Oaklands" Anderson. They later he lived in Preston, then Murrumbeena followed by Hughesdale.
     At Lance Creek he had a school opened in the front room of his dwellings, then he donated an acre for the Lance Creek State School to be built. He also had permission to open a Post Office, also in his dwelling, the address being Lance Creek via Kongwak. He was a councillor for the Bass & Phillip Island Shire until he moved to a drier area (Bolinda). [Elsie May Ruby, 1976]
     St Clair (Lance Creek) no.3715 School register lists Marjorie, b. 1.10.03, Lulu b. 1.8.05, Elsie b. 4.6.07 & Myrtle b. 15 2.09 entering school in January 1912, his occupation was farmer, their school last attended was Powlett River, they left to attend the Wonthaggi N. S.S..
     William Sergeant Ruby married Lily Lloyd on 4 November 1902 in Collingwood, Victoria.
     William and Lily were registered as William Sergeant Ruby, storekeeper, Lilly Ruby home duties at Yarram, on the 1903 electoral roll.
     William Sergeant Ruby and Lily Lloyd were on the passenger list of the "Nestor", arriving at Melbourne, in September 1921. Mr Wm S Ruby 44 & Mrs Ruby, 40, departed from England. William Sergeant Ruby was listed in a directory dated 1925 at Fell Crescent, Malvern East, Victoria. He was listed in a directory dated 1940 as Wm S Ruby at 91 Oakover Road, Preston, Victoria.
     William and Lily were registered as William Sergeant uby, agent;Lily, home duties; Margaret Lily, home duties; Louisa Frances, nurse; Elsie May, public servant; Edith Lloyd, sales at 24 Melbourne St, Oakleigh, on the 1942 electoral roll. William Sergeant Ruby was listed in a directory dated 1948 as Wm S Ruby at 23 Euston Road, Oakleigh.
     William died on 29 December 1962 in Sampford Private Hospital, Caulfield, Victoria, aged 85. His usual residence was 23 Euston Rd, Oakleigh, William Sergeant Ruby, aged 85, grazier.. He was buried on 31 December 1962 in Cheltenham.
     His will was proved on 24 April 1964. Retired grazier of Hughesdale.
