John Geere
(31 March 1562 - before 14 June 1618)
John Geere was christened on 31 March 1562 in Wivelsfield, Sussex. He was the son of John Geere and Joan Unknown (Geere). They witnessed Diones Geere's will dated circa 1607 in North Mundham, Sussex.
Jeremy Geere wrote: The will of Dennis Geere made in 1607 mentions his brother John and his children John, Joane, Jane and Elizabeth. John's own will was made in 1627 and names him as John Geere of Sidlesham, yeoman. This names his children as Johane married to William Turner; John; and Jane married to John Faith. He also mentions his grandsons John and William Stapler sons of John Stapler late of Sidlesham deceased. His will was proved at Chichester in the same year.
Marriages have been identified for his daughters as follows:
8 Aug 1614 at Sidlesham John Staple to Elizabeth Geere
29 Dec 1619 at Sidlesham William Turner to Joane Geere
15 July 1624 at Chichester John Faith to Jane Geere
There are various entries in the Wivelsfield register which may well relate to his family, particularly as his father left him leasehold lands in Wivelsfield and Ditchling.

There were other Geere families in the area at that time including a Thomas Geere who married Margaret West in 1613/4 at Cuckfield and a Richard Geere who married Eve West in 1619 at Cuckfield so there is some hesitation in confirming John Geere of Cuckfield as the son of John Geere [B4]. A Robert Geere of Chailey died in 1609 leaving a son John Geere and daughters Joane and Mary. Otherwise the name John does not appear elsewhere.
Of the children named:

James may have been the James Geere who married in 1665 at South Heighton to Anne Reade. He may have been the ancestor of the Folkington Geers by the following very
tentative line:
Richard baptized1668 at South Heighton, husbandman
James baptized 1701 at Tarring Neville. Possibly the James Geer who was born about 1705 and married 1738/9 at Arlington to ANN AKEHURST.
