George Steer

(13 December 1683 - before 25 October 1738)
     George Steer was christened on 13 December 1683 in St Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire. He was the son of William Steer and Sarah Ludlam.
     In 1710, he was "nomina guardianorum" of the parish church. He was apparently the licensee of an inn in Sheffield. [Banks papers p.119]. He was left £150 by his mother's will. There is some discrepancy between the printed parish registers and the Steer pedigree re his elder children's names, etc.
George, gentleman, Sheffield, photocopy. bargain and sale land in Sheffield [Sheffield Archves, NR 866 (1)]. George was a mercer in Sheffield. George was issued a marriage license on 28 November 1710 in York.
     George Steer married Jane Clough after 28 November 1710 in Stockport, Cheshire, England. A letter from William Steer to Joseph Banks of Scofton dated 11 Oct 1710, Ecclesfield - The last week being engaged at my brother George's wedding in Cheshire ....
George Steer was mentioned in the register of duties paid for apprentices' indentures on 27 October 1716 in Sheffield, Yorkshire. George Steer, mercer & draper of Sheffield paid the indenture tax on his apprentice Michael Thompson, son of Samuel Thompson, gent of Bawtry and again on 25 Oct 1718.
     George died before 25 October 1738 in Sheffield, Yorkshire. He was buried on 25 October 1738 in Sheffield.

     He possibly married Alice Beaumont in 1750 at Wath on Dearne [Boyd's marriage index].
. George Steer was christened on 27 May 1720 in St Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire. He was the son of George Steer and Jane Clough.
     George matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge University, on 13 October 1741. Admitted sizar (aged 21) St John's Cambridge 13 Oct 1741, son & heir of George, mercer, deceased of Yorkshire & nephew of Charles. Born Sheffield baptised 27 May 1720, school - Sheffield (Mr Cliffe). George was a clergyman from 1757 to 1799. He was Curate of Ruskington Lincs; Vicar of Isleham, Cambs. 1757-99.
     George died aged 81 on 31 December 1799 in Weedon, Northamptonshire, aged 79. He was buried in Weedon Pinckney.
     His will was proved in 1800 at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Of Weedon Loys.
