Rev Charles Steer

     Charles matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge University, from 1718 to 1722. He was admitted Sizar at St Johns, Sep 10 1718. 6th son of William, cutler of Sheffield. School Beighton (Mr Drake), B.A. 1722-3. Ordained deacon York June 9 1723, priest June 4 1732. Curate/Vicar of Bradfield 1725-41. Rector of Handsworth 1741-52. Charles was a clergyman at Yorkshire, from 1723. He was ordained deacon at York June 9 1723, priest June 4 1732. Charles was curate then vicar at Bradfield, Yorkshire, from 1725 to 1741. Rector of Handsworth 1741-52.
1725 Charles Steer who was born at Darnall near Sheffield - his elder brother being the Vicar of Ecclesfield placed him here. He removed in 1741 to the rectory of Hansworth at the death of Dr Folyer - his father having bought the next term?? & died there. [Curates of Bradfield, Ronksley Collection #1905].
     Rev Charles Steer married Mary Bacon on 9 December 1725 in Yorkshire. Charles was the rector at Hansworth, Yorkshire, from 1741 to 1752. A transcript of his return for Archbishop Herring's visitation dated 3 June 1743 is held. He ministers to 169 families including 12 Dissenters, 10 Quakers, 1 Papist and 1 Presbyterian without a curate. [Y.A.S. v.71 p.179].
     Rev Charles Steer was mentioned in the will of Rev William Steer dated 17 May 1745.
     Rev Charles Steer made a will dated 1749 in Hansworth.
     Charles died on 2 February 1752 in Hansworth, Yorkshire, aged 52.
     His will was proved on 30 July 1752 at the Court of the Chancellor of York with Laughton, Yorkshire. Rev Charles Steer, Handsworth, will & codicil.
