Admiral Henry Medley

(1687 - 5 August 1747)
     Admiral Henry Medley was born in 1687. He was the son of Robert Medley and Dorothy Grimston.
Admiral Henry Medley married Anne Goche, daughter of Nathaniel Goch and Dorothy Grimston, on 29 November 1713 in York Minster, York, Yorkshire. Captaine Henry Medley and Mrs Anne Gouhe.
He was Governor of Newfoundland & Labrador 1739-1740. He entered the Royal Navy in 1703, and was promoted through service on many ships throughout his career in the Baltic and Mediterranean seas, including the Poole, York and Leopard. In 1739, he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland and served for two seasons. In 1744, he was promoted Rear-admiral of the White, in 1745 he became Vice-admiral and Commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean. In July 1747, he was promoted to Vice-admiral of the Red but died, likely in ignorance of the advancement, on August 5th, 1747 on board the Russell at Vado.
     Admiral Henry Medley made a will dated 2 August 1747 in Savona, Italy. Henry Medley, of Little Smeaton, co. York, esq , vice-admiral of the Blue Squadron of his Maties fleet, & commander-in-chief of his Maties ships & vessels imployed in the Mediterranean," desires to be buried in the parish church of St. Michael-le-Belfrey, York. He bequeaths £7,000 to his nephew John Kilvington, of Acomb, gent., £3,000 to his niece Mrs. Dorothy Kilvington, of York, and a like sum to Jane, daughter of the above John Kilvington. All his real estates he leaves to Thomas Grimston, esq., of Etton, and his heirs, remainder to his said nephew John Kilvington.
     Henry died on 5 August 1747 in Savona. A monument to his memory, in the north aisle of the choir of York Minster, bears the following inscription : In Memory of The Honble. Henry Medley , Essq., Vice Admiral of the Blue and Commander in Chief in the Mediterranean, who died at Savona Aug: 5th., 1747: He was son to Robert Medley, Esqr., by Dorothy daughter to William Grimston of Grimston Garth, Esqr. He married Ann daughter and heiress to Mr Nathaniel Goche, merchant in Hull, by Dorothy sister to Thomas Grimston, Esq., Grandson to the abovenamed William ; and had issue by her one daughter who died young.

     Ellen Meenagh was also known as Minagh in records. The name is found mostly in co. Tyrone. She was born circa 1815 in Ireland. The name Meenagh is common in Termonmaguirk in the 1901 census and there is an Annie in Sultan townland. In the Griffith Valuation of Ireland the name is recorded as Minagh. Meenaghs are to be found in the parishes of Arboe, Ematris, Clonfeacle, Drumglass, Tullylish, Bovevah, Carrickfergus, Derryloran, Holywood and possibly Aghagallon (Meenaght). There are Meenans in Termonmaguirk. It is also spelled Minagh & Managh.
Ellen Meenagh married Charles Hagan, son of Patriarch Hagan, before 1835.
     Ellen died on 31 March 1868?. In Killycanavan, Coagh, Cookstown Union, Registration district of Coagh, Tyrone: an Ellen Hagan died 31 March 1868, aged 88, married, housewife, of senile decay. The informant was Jane Hagan of same. This person seems too old to be Ellen's mother. There werer 2 Ellen Hagan deaths in Dungannon - 1875 & 1877. A Nellie Hagan aged 78 died in Cookstown in 1877, and a 70 year old Ellen in 1867 in the Omagh Registration District & another aged 84 in 1882 (wife of Patrick), 1886 aged 80 farmer's widow.
