William Popplewell was also known as William Popplewell (son of James) in records. He was christened on 8 November 1600 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was described as the fourth son in his father's will. He was the son of James Popplewell and Elizabeth Broughton.

He was not mentioned in his grandfather's will in 1538! and mentioned separately in his father's 1555 will which may suggest that he is the youngest and not old enough to be joint executor. If he is the grandfather of Francis, he must have a brother Francis.. He was the son of William Popplewell and (?) Unknown.
