Rowan Gibbs of New Zealand has supplied information about her son, etc. Her son's obit in Auckland Star 17 Aug 1886 p.2:
It is with feelings of sincere regret that we to-day announce the death of Mr James D. Davis, who for several years has been engaged on the staff of the STAR. Mr Davis was a native of Hastings, England, and he came to the colony about seven years ago, in ill health. He was a young man of great promise, a scholar of considerable achievements, and possessed cultured literary tastes. He entered as an under-graduate of the New Zealand University, and carried off the Bowen Prize in 1883. Mr Davis had given special attention to historical studies, and issued an admirable brochure, sketching English social life two centuries ago. He was a constant contributor to the columns of the STAR, and also wrote the critical notes published weekly over the signature of “Little Agib” in the Leader.
Possessing many of the highest mental and moral qualities, his life was yet a continuous struggle against physical weakness. Inheriting a consumptive constitution, he prolonged his life only by exercising the greatest care, yet he was never for a moment idle. During the intervals of his painful illness he compiled a complete Bibliography of New Zealand, to which he put the finishing touches while lying on his deathbed. This will, we hope, shortly be published. The loss of a man in which there were such possibilities of good to the world, in the very prime of life, being only thirty years of age, cannot but be deplored. To those who knew him as a friend his death will come home more keenly; to himself, however, the burden of his suffering had latterly become so great that death came as a happy relief from physical weakness. He contemplated his departure with calm resignation and an assured hope. He leaves a wife, but no children, and the news of his death will be a blow to his mother, who is still living in England.
