Stockton Record 29 Dec, 1923 - Gilbert McMillan Ross. Sketch of subject by R O Yardley and note that Mr Ross believes that book-learning balanced by an equal amount of training the work shop, is the only practical plan of education
With a technical education grained in the best schools in England and 56 years activity in the mines of California and Nevada, G McMillan Ross stands today as one of the notable authorities on mining in the West. On Jan 20 in the coming year Mr Ross will enter his 73rd year. He is today a mentally powerful man, who enjoys half a century of work which has contributed materially to the upbuilding
of the West.
He is a native of Northern Scotland and following the completion of his studies in England, he came to the United States in 1869, travelling by way of Panama to San Francisco. He went directly to Virginia City Nevada, and at that place, before he was 20 years of age, he was applying his education in chemistry and mining engineering to practical everyday work as assayer and surveyor at the
largest mine there. For one year he was assistant assayer in the United States mint at Carson City, Nev., and later returned to Virginia City, where he took charge of the bullion and assaying of the Big Bonanza mine.
Coming to California, Mr Ross took charge of the large copper mine at
Copperopolis and for many years developed that mine to the best of its yield. He also became interested in gold-bearing properties in Amador and Calaveras and worked these in conjunction with his copper properties. His close acquaintance with the mother lode country enabled him to supply the topographical, engineering and mining data used the map of the Bret Harte trail recently issued by the Stockton Chamber of Commerce.
Mr Ross was married in San Francisco to Miss Ellen Ward, a native of Vermont. Their family circle today numbers three daughters - Mrs H E Zobel (sic) of Berkeley, Miss Mary Ethel Ross and Miss Ella B Ross of Stockton - and John R Ross. Two grandsons, two granddaughters and a great-grandson complete the family group.
For the past 14 years Mr Ross has been a consulting mining and metallurgical engineer, with headquarters in Stockton. He is a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and of the Stockton Chamber of Commerce. He is deeply interested in the conservation of California water, and as a step toward such conservation is active in the Stockton Water Consumers League.
Mr Ross' hobby is the reorganization of the public school system. He advocates a plan whereby the school day be divided into two equal parts - one half th day to be devoted to intellectual pursuit and the other half to industrial training and work.
"This is a perfect system of education and of the type essential in a
democracy" says Mr Ross. "Furthermore, it is a self-supporting school system. Any study of political economy will show how necessary such an educational system is today". [photocopy supplied by Olive Gorham]..

Whe he retired they moved to some land on which there was a mine that his father operated many years before. They worked it a little, but became interested in publishing a small newspaper which was entirely related to mining. They published it almost up to the time they died.
They did a lot of speaking and crusading in trying to get the price of gold raised. He once testified before a Congressional Committee in Washington, D.C.
They always said that the mines had shut down because the cost of getting the gold out of the ground was too much. Unfortunately he did not live to see the price of gold raised.
