The Exeter & Plymouth Gazette on Friday 17 June 1864 reported: Samuel Rendle Ruby, an apprentice to Mr Lavis, tailor, of Wolborough-street, wa charged with absenting himself form his master's employ for several weeks past. - Mr Francis appeard for the defendant, and contended that as the lad's parents were in receipt of parochial relief they not in a position to maintain the lad, who was serving his third year and only getting 3s per week. He, therefore asked the Bench to cancel the indenture. The complainant refusing to maintain the lad, the indenture was cancelled..
     Samuel served in the Royal Navy He volunteered on 17 Aug 1864 for a ten year engagement from age of 18 in the Royal Navy. Service no: 30479 on "HMS Implacable" Boy 2 Class. He was described as well grown, stout lad, perfectly sound and healthy constitution, free from all physical malformation, and intelligrent and consider in all respects fit for HM service. The consent of his parents or friends has been obtained in writing, and they are willing and desirous that the boy should be entered for 10 years continous and general service from the age of 18 ... He signed his name to consent and declare he was not an apprentice. George Ruby made his mark 15 August 1864. Date of boy's birth - 17 Dec 1849 17 August 1864.
