Chagford, Devon

In 1850 Chagford was described as a small ancient town on the eastern side of Dartmoor Forest, in the picturesque valley of the river Teign, comprising 7492 acres. 6732 are old enclosures and well cultivated, 1271 acres are in pasture and tillage in Dartmoor, 359 acres are waste and 129 acres in roads, etc. It was made one of the stannary towns in 1328 and its court operated until c.1790. The court house fell down in 1618, killing the steward and 9 others.
The population peaked in 1831 with 1868 inhabitants. in 1801 it held 1115 people. There were 5 manors in the parish
