'Birthwaite Hall', Kexborough, Darton, Yorkshire

Pevsner states: 3/4 mile north west of Darton. Gabled house on H plan... The owner then was John Silvester, and afterwards a nephew of his. John Silvester, was, according to Joseph Hunter, smith to the Tower of London, and is said to have made a long chain across the River Thames to prevent the Dutch fleet from sailing up the river. ... In the garden a replica of the statue of John Silvester in Darton church.
From 1822: "Birthwaite Hall, in the township of Kexbrough, and parish of Darton, liberty of Pontefract; 4 miles from Barnsley, 8 from Wakefield. Birthwaite Hall was formerly the residence of the ancestors of the present Sir Francis Burdett, Bart. Thomas Burdett, the second son of Richard Burdett of Denby, was living here in 1494."
