Barbados
Barbados covers 166 square miles and is the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands, the capital being Bridgetown with a population of 11,304 in 1960. It is the most densely populated of the islands. The terrain is hilly but not mountainous, with a moderate temperature and constant breeze. Annual rainfall is 60 inches. It was settled by the English in 1627. By the end of 1628 it had 1950 settlers and the land was granted to the Earl of Pembroke, but all the Caribbean Islands had been granted to the Earl of Carlisle in 1627. Proprietary rule was extinguished in 1652 and after the Restoration the patent was surrendered to the Crown.
