     Col John Cosmo MacPherson Farquharson was born on 18 March 1839 in Tomintoul, Kirkmichael, Banffshire. He was the son of Rev Charles MacPherson and Mary Farquharson. Col John Cosmo MacPherson Farquharson was christened on 9 May 1839 in Tomintoul.
     He served in the Ordnance Department. He became Col. Sir John Farquharson KCB in 1871. Director General of the Ordnance Survey (1887-1894).
He was unmarried, Aberdeen University records show he attended Marischal College 1854-58 and was awarded silver pen, became Colonel ( RE ), CB 1890 later KCB, he changed his surname becoming Col John Cosmo Farquharson of Corrachree, Director General of the Ordnance Survey 1894-99.
     John died on 3 July 1905 aged 66. He was of Corrachree, Tarland.
