William Copperwheat

     William Copperwheat was christened on 11 August 1782 in Essendon, Hertfordshire. He was the son of Robert Copperwheat and Martha Butler.
William Copperwheat married Isabella Lamsdill on 30 April 1804 in St Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex. Banns of marriage between William Copperwheite & Isabella Lamsdill were published April 8, 15 & 22 1804. William Copperweite of this parish and hamlet of MEOT, bachelor and Isabella Lamsdill of this parish and same hamlet, spinster were married in this church by banns this thirtieth day of April 1804 ... both signed (with a cross) in the presence of William Featherstone & Mary Lamsdill.
The examination of Isabella Copperwheat wife of William Copperwheat. Middlesex, to wit, this examinant on her oath saeth that she is the wife of the said William Copperwheat and to whom she was married at the parish church of St Dunstan, Stepney, Mdx, by banns on 30 April 1804, that her said husband hath not gained any settlement in his own right to this examinant's knowledge - that he is now confined in the House of Correction at Cold Bath Fields - That Robert Copperwheat the father of this examinant's said husband took and rented a certain piece of land of the late Samuel Whitbread Esquire in the year 1780 - and which said land was situate in the parish of Essendon near Berkhampstead in the county of Herts at the yearly rent of £36 which said land he rented about 8 years during which said time he resided in a cottage in the said parish of Essendon but the rent he paid for same this examinant cannot say. That in the year 17898 the said Robert Copperwheat took and rented a certain cottage and a wheelwright's hop at the rent of £4 19 -0 per annum, the same being situate near the Queen's Head public house in the said parish of Essendon and he now resides therein. Paid Poor's rate and all other taxes for the same. That in the year 1816 the rent of the said cottage and wheelwright's shop was increased to £10 per annum (exclusive of al parochial rates). That her said husband is the lawful issue of the said Robert Copperwheat by Martha his now wife to whom he was married at the parish church of St Peter's Bedford on 12 October 1776 by banns. That she this examinant hat by her said husband 2 children namely Matilda aged 6 years and upwards and Mary Amelia aged about 2 months and not being able to maintain herself and her said 2 children she hath become chargeable to the parish of St Leonard Shoreditch. Sworn before us 19 Feb 1818. The mark of Isabella Copperwheat.
The adjacent page states: Wm Copperwheat - convicted on 5 Nov 1817, sentenced 6 months imprisonment. William Copperwheat was committed for nine days, for being found gambling at Bully-Alley, Fulham, with cups and balls in February 1817. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation at the Surrey Assizes for larceny circa June 1818 in Surrey. He was transported to New South Wales arriving 4 March 1819. He was transported for 7 years per the "Surry". They continued on and arrived in Tasmania on the Surrey on 17 Oct [Mar?] 1818. His conduct record states 2 Aug 1822 absent from muster ... 1830 had an unlicenced dog..
     William Copperwheat was recorded in 1826 census in Tasmania. In the 1826 muster was he described as free, certificate 20 August 1825. His certificate of freedom was dated 20 August 1825.
William Copperwheat married Elizabeth Wolf on 23 May 1828 in Sorell, Tasmania. William Copperwheat, widower of the parish of Sorell & Elizabeth Wolf, widow of the parish of Sorell, married by banns. He signed, she made her mark..
     William was buried on 7 December 1836 in Hobart, Tasmania. William Copperwheat, aged 52, wheelwright, buried.
