The name Thomas Phillips Burt then missed a generation but was used in the next 2 generations, for my great grandfather and one of his sons. On April 9th 1788 there was a great fire in Norton, which started in a bakery and spread in an easterly direction for about 150 metres burning down 5 farm houses, stables and barns and 9 cottages, the homes of 14 poor families. Harry Cottingham Burt

(26 June 1845 - 15 April 1872)
David Burt wrote: Harry Burt was a young and successful ironmonger who was originally apprenticed to Mr Bull, in Bury St Edmunds. He married Elizabeth Debenham and ran his Ironmongers shop in Great Yarmouth. He had a young family of four girls (His only son had died in infancy). Harry had travelled to Rotterdam on business, staying in the Boompjes area of the city, when he died. We have, as yet, been unable to find the cause of death. Referring to Harry Burt and the recovery of his body from Rotterdam by Charles Bullen:-“It was Charles who crossed over to Holland to bring back the body of Harry Burt to be buried in England in 1871. He found that none of the regular ships would take a corpse, even for the brief crossing, because of the superstition of the sailors, so he had to charter a small sailing vessel. When he arrived in the Thames he had the greatest difficulty in avoiding the attentions of the police, who naturally wanted a full explanation from a young man in a yacht bringing ashore a corpse with nothing to prove how the death had been caused except a bit of paper written in Dutch. Only the intervention of his doctor cousin Robert Debenham and a lawyer cousin prevented him from being arrested forthwith.”
Quote from ‘7 Centuries of Debenhams’ a book by Professor Frank Debenham who is featured on an Australian Antarctic Territory stamp as he was an Australian on the Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole with Captain Scott.
