Alice Mary Whitwell
(18 May 1895 - 29 March 1995)
The following is a story written in pencil by Alice Mary Whitwell.Date is was written is unknown. It tells a brief history of her family & her life prior to marrying Albert Joseph LaFortune on March-20-1924.
Mother Susan Jane Mann 26 June 1854 2 sisters Aunt Annie Beedles Aunt Bessie Maquire Father was a dock worker ?? school was paid for Mother came to Canada as a maid or governess to the Irwin family of three boys & 2 girls. Mrs. Irwin was an only child & was deaf although everything was done for her & she was hard of hearing all her life. Her husband travelled for a tea company & was often gone for months at a time. When mother came with the Irwins they must have settled near Winnipeg as they could see the lights of Fort Rouge in the distance. Think Dad had a fish store around in the district & that is how they became acquainted. Eventually the Irwin family came out to the Coast & Mother came with them. Apparently Dad came out about the same time. Mother writes Irwin's & Dad worked for the city laying sidewalks & then for Langley's Drugstore. Both she & Dad decided to get a small cottage on Herald Street. Dad had developed (I think) diptheria & Mother nursed him at Herald Street. After he got over it they
were married on ??? Day (?) by Cannon Beaulands of Christ Church. They then had the cottage moved down to Packington Street. It was up on wood blocks for some time but the garden was a starting point and Dad got an express job with one horse & wagon. All the family were born on Packington Street. The only heat we had for ages was the kitchen stove. The house had ?? ?? ?? floors. I can remember the chamber pot frozen in the bedrooms overnight. The outhouse was down in the yard & next to the chicken house-take a lantern at night if necessary. Dad had a wonderful garden & Mother had rasps etc that Dad would take on a large platter ( picked at 6 am ) to the New England Hotel on Government Street. To help out Mother had a couple of houses she did cleaning jobs. Also took in odd washing jobs for next door. Father's Mother had no washing machine but Dad got her a cooperage barrel & a dolley-a round piece at the bottom with three pegs & a cross for the top-she would put her water & soap (this was always scraps
of Sunlight Soap melted from time to time). The idea was to churn the wash back & forth dump the water & put in fresh water more water & then wringer out & over family line. Our home was lit only by coal lamp & what a thrill we got when Dick Brooker & another chap ??? ??? came to wire up our attic. At that time had only 2 planks & we were scared they would slip off & come right through. However all went well & we had no more coal oil lamps.
