In Memorium: The death took place on Sunday afternoon of a very old resident, Mr. John McKenzie Snr., at the advanced age of 80 years. The subject of our notice had been ailing for some little time past, having been cared for by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. William McKenzie, at their residence in Yarram. The cause of death was senile decay. The late Mr. McKenzie was a typical Scotchman, born in Cromarty, in the "land o' cakes", and with his wife and family, father and brothers, came to Australia in December 1870. But a few days were spent in Melbourne, when the subject of our notice, with his family and father, boarded the steamer 'Avon' for Port Albert. For a while he was employed at 'Calrossie', til he and his father (stonemason's by trade) entered into a contract with the late Mr John Gellion to build a stone house at 'Woodlands', which, today is an example of good workmanship. This work accomplished, the deceased started in carrying business in connection with the steamers, and in March 1875 carted the 'Standard' plant for Mr. John Rossiter to the office in Wharf St, Port Albert, where the first issue was printed.
In later years deceased selected land on Macks Creek, and by dint of hard work on the property known as 'Bannans', was able to retire in comfortable circumstances. This estate was leased only a few years ago.
The late Mr. McKenzie leaves 4 grown up sons and 2 daughters, having had 8 in family but 2 died in Scotland. His wife pre-deceased him 21 years ago. The funeral yesterday was attended by a number of old residents, the remains being interred in the Alberton Cemetery. The Presbyterian service was read by the Rev. F. Tomagno, and Mr. James S. Graham attended to the mortuary arrangements
. He was buried on 20 July 1915 in the Presbyterian section, Alberton. Bereavement Notice: Mr. & Mrs. William McKenzie, Yarram, express their heartfelt thanks to all kind friends for letter, telegrams and floral tributes in their recent sad bereavement, and desire to specially thank Dr Crooks and Nurse Lawler for their kindness and attention, also Mrs Bell.
His will was proved on 8 September 1915 at Victoria. He left his son John only one shilling.
He may have inherited property from the Fergusons. He was a freemason of the Lodge of Robinson in Cromarty, his apron was returned to Cromarty by a policeman. His property "Bannans" had to be sold in 1922 to distribute the estate.
