The London gazette of yesterday announced that at Whitehall on Sep 7, The Queen has been pleased to grant unto John William Denne Hilton, of Temple Belwood, in the parish of Belton in theIsle of Axolme, in the county of Lincoln, Esq., a Lieutenant in the 3rd (King's Own) Regiment of Hussars, and in the commission of the peace for the said county, eldest son of John Denne Hilton, cler, by Elizabeth Frances, his wife, sisster of Robert Popplewell Johnson, formerly Robert Popplewell Steer), of Temple Belwood, afsd, esq, all deceased, her royal licence and authority that he and his issue may, in compliance with a clause contained in the last will and testament of William Popplewell Bellingham Johnson, of Temple Belwood afsd, esq, deceased, henceforth to take and use the suname of Johnson only, instead of that of Hilton, and that he and they may bear arms of Johnson, quarterly with his and their own family arms; such arms being duly exemplified according to the laws of arms, and recorded in the College of Arms, otherwise the said such licence and permission to be void and of none effect? Temple Belwood with 1695 acres of rich pasture and fertile arable land, the greater portion being freehold the remainder being copyhold of the Manor of Epworth. Robert Bowker's diary stated: Temple Belwood was heavily mortgaged when he took possession. Spent $22.000 of his wife's money to do it up. He sold it in 1927 because of the agricultural depression with 16 farms to a syndicate for $30,000 - see his letter dated 4 July 1909. Very much in debt at his death [JNB 2 Aug 1975] see also will.
     John died on 28 September 1927 in Champneys Nursing Home, Tring, Hertfordshire, aged 81. He was buried on 30 September 1927 in St Nicholas, Wade, Kent. Their memorial states: John William Denne Hilton-Johnson of Sarre Court, died September 27 1927, and, Louisa Catherine his wife, died Dec 10, 1921.
     His will was proved on 28 October 1927 at PPR. He left his estate to Cicely Hilton Hilton-Johnson of Bevercotes, 12 Oban Rd, Bournemouth.
