Welsh Biography Online (National LIbrary of Wales) states: The Wynns of Gwydir belonged to a stock which was engaged during the 14th and 15th cents, in establishing the nuclei of small estates in the free townships of Penyfed and Pennant in Eifionydd . About the beginning of the 14th cent. , Dafydd ap Gruffydd of Nantconwy (claiming descent from Owain Gwynedd ) m. Eva , daughter and heiress of Gruffydd Fychan , one of the coheirs of ‘ Gwely Wyrion Gruffydd ’ in Penyfed . The descendants of this union are found at Gesail Gyfarch , Ystumcegid , Clenennau , and Brynkir . During the revolt of Owain Glyndwr (q.v.) , Ieuan ap Maredudd ap Hywel ap Dafydd ap Gruffydd of Cefn-y-fan (later called Ystumcegid ) and Gesail Gyfarch supported the crown and d. in 1403 while defending Caernarvon castle against Glyndwr 's forces; his brother, Robert , was one of Glyndwr ’ followers and received a pardon from Henry , prince of Wales , in 1408 . As a result, possibly, of this division of loyalties, the bulk of the family possessions remained in the possession of the line of Ieuan ap Maredudd until 1463 ; in that year, the lands were partitioned and Gesail Gyfarch fell to the share of Ieuan ap Robert ap Maredudd ( 1437 - 1468 ). He was a Lancastrian and died of the plague at Gesail Gyfarch in 1468 . His son, Maredudd , to avoid implication in the feuds of his kinsmen in Eifionydd , purchased the lease of Dolwyddelan castle about 1489 ; he later built Penamnen , and finally purchased Gwydir from Dafydd ap Hywel Coetmor about 1500 .. He was born circa 1459 in Wales. He was the son of Ieuan ap Robert and Catherine ferch Rhys ap Howel Vychan.
Meredith ap Ieuan Wyn married Alice William ap Griffith in Wales. He married secondly Gwenhwyfer, daughter of Gruffydd ap Howel y Farf, relict of Robert Griffith, of Plas Newydd. He co-habited with Margaret, daughter of Morris ap John ap Meredydd, of Clenenney; she only co-habited with him, as his 2nd wife survived him. They had issue.

He lived formerly at Crug, Llanfairisgaer; he bought Gwydir from Dafydd ap Howel Coetmor. He was buried in Dolwyddelan, Wales.

     Sir? John Wynn was born circa 1584 in Gwydir, Llanwrst, Caernarvonshire, Wales. He was educated at Bedford School and Lincoln's Inn . He was high sheriff of Merioneth , 1611-2 , and was knighted in 1613 . His marriage to Margaret , daughter of Sir Thomas Cave , appears to have been unhappy, and he travelled in France and Italy , 1613-4 , and d. at Lucca , 1614 , possibly in the Roman faith. He was the son of Sir John Wynn (1st Bart) and Sidney Gerrard.
     John died in 1614 in Lucca, Italy.

Sir John Wynn (1st Bart)

     Sir John Wynn (1st Bart) was born in 1553 in Gwydir, Llanwrst, Caernarvonshire, Wales. He was the son of Morris Wynne and Jane Bulkeley.
     John matriculated at Oxford University in 1570. A student of All Souls , Oxford , in 1570 , he was at Furnival's Inn in 1572 and at the Inner Temple in 1576.
Sir John Wynn (1st Bart) married Sidney Gerrard circa 1575. Sir John Wynn (1st Bart) was knighted in 1606. He was appointed a member of the Council of the Marches in 1608.
'John Wynn, of Gwydder, co. Carnarvon, Knt' son and heir of Maurice Wynn, of Gwydir afsd, by Jane daughter of Sir Richard Bulkeley, of Beaumorris, co. Anglesey; was Knighted at Whitehall 14 May 1606, and was created a Baronet, as above, 29 June 1611. He, who was a great collector of Welsh antiquities, was author of a history of the "Gwedir family". He married about 1575, Sidney, daughter of Sir William Gerrard, L Chancellor of Ireland (1576), by whom he had 11 sons and 2 daughters. He died 1 March 1626, and was buried at Llanwryst, M.I. Will pr. 1727. The Admon of his widow, dated 2 July 1632, to her son Sir Richard Wynn, Bart. . John was created a baronet in 1611.

Sir John Wynn (5th Baronet)

     Sir John Wynn (5th Baronet) was born circa 1628 in Wales. He was the son of Henry Wynn.
Only son of Henry Wynne who was 10th son of the 1st Baronet. Succeeded his cousin Sir Richard Wynn as 5th Baronet about 1674. Of Watstay (afterwards Wynnstay). Mar. Jane, daughter & heiress of Eyton Evans, of Watstay co. Denbigh by whom he acquired that estate. She died before him. He d.s.p. 7 Jan 1718/9 aged 91, when the Baronetcy became extinct. By his will he devised the Wynnstay estate to his first cousin twice removed, viz. Watkin Williams, son of Sir William Williams, 2nd Bart [1688], by Jane daughter & co-heir of Edward Thelwall and Sidney his wife, who was the only child that had issue of William Wynn, Prothonotary of Wales, the 6th son of Sir John Wynn, 1st Bart. The said Watkin Williams thereupon assumed the additional name of Wynn, and succeeded to the Baronetcy [1688] on the death of his father in 1710, being ancestor of the present family of Williams Wynn, Baronets

Sir Owen Wynn (3rd Baronet)

     Sir Owen Wynn (3rd Baronet) was born circa 1592 in Gwydir, Llanwrst, Caernarvonshire, Wales. He was the son of Sir John Wynn (1st Bart) and Sidney Gerrard.
He was educated at Westminster , Eton , and St John's, Cambridge . He was apprenticed to a merchant of the Staple in 1608 , but eventually came under the patronage of lord-keeper (later archbishop ) John Williams, whose niece, Grace , he married. in 1462 . Like his elder brother, he took no active part in the Civil Wars . Although threatened with sequestration in 1656 , he appears to have escaped and as sheriff of Caernarvonshire in 1653 , he proclaimed Cromwell as Protector . He was high sheriff of Denbighshire in 1656 . He was interested in alchemy, chemistry, and metallurgy.
Succeeded his brother to the Baronetcy 1649. He married Grace, daughter of Hugh Williams, of Werg co. Carnarvon. Her will proved 1680.
     Owen died in 1660.
