Francis William Bowker

(10 March 1843 - 24 November 1929)
Francis William Bowker was born on 10 March 1843 See.http://1820settlers.com/for more on this family. in Burbage, Wiltshire. He was the son of Charles James Bowker and Mary Wembridge. Francis William Bowker was christened on 7 December 1846 in Burbage, Wiltshire. Francis William, son of Charles Bowker, policeman and Mary.
He was sailor on HMS Renown in 1861 census, in port of Beirut, Syria. He later was a fireman in Lambeth, London. He lived in the fire station lodgings with his wife, Susannah and several of their children until they emigrated to South Africa, between the births of their son Arthur Edward, 9 Oct 1879, in Lambeth, London, and their next child, Daisy Jane, 3 Feb 1882, in Woodville, Cape, South Africa. His granddaughter, Doris Bowker, said that in his later years he ran a holiday boarding house on the coast near Knysna, in the Cape.
" he had his thumb shot off by a musket ball in the Boxer Rebellion in China in about 1900. His earlier career as a sailor had been a brief stint with the Royal Navy in the HMS Renown, in 1861, as shown on the census form when the Renown was in harbour in Beirut, then Syria. There is no corroborative evidence of his participation in the Boxer Rebellion and no record of a second term as a navy recruit, but he may have been in the merchant navy. There is an extant photograph of Francis William dressed as a sailor, looking very young, but with no RN insignia on his uniform.

Shelagh later wrote: Francis William was never in the Boxer Rebellion - he was over 50 when that happened. The photograph of him shows him with his left hand ?bandaged? - at best an amorphous lump at the end of his arm. So he must have been in China earlier, around the 1860s, before he married. There are numerous family tales about him which show that he had indeed been in China.
