Paul MacPherson
(before 29 March 1818 - 25 February 1898)
Paul MacPherson was born before 29 March 1818 in Blackhaughs, Kirkmichael, Banffshire, Scotland. He was christened on 29 March 1818 in Kirkmichael. Paul, son of Alexander McPherson, Blackhaugh by his spouse Anne Grant was bapt 29 March 1818. He was the son of Alexander MacPherson and Anne Grant.
A Paul McPherson, his wife and 5 children of Tomintoul had "removed from this mission" by 20 April 1824. In 1836 there was a single man Paul McPherson of Tomintoul listed in the Roman Catholic "Status Animarum". These references are probably to Paul the shoemaker.
On 5th Dec 1839 [the Rev Charles McPherson?] wrote "In consequence of the extreme failure of the crop of 1838 owing to the severe harvest frost and the previous failure of the crops of 1836 and 1837, a very great distribution prevailed in this parish and it was found necessary to raise extraordinary supplies for the maintenance of the Poor in this and the neighbouring parish of Kirkmichael..."
He then lists the families relieved and the quantity of meal in pecks which each family received during the whole period. On Cosmo McPherson's list Ellick, a George McPherson received 92 pecks, on the Braes of Avon list Jane MpPherson received 8 pecks, Wm McPherson received 45 pecks & Wm McPherson, Dalavorar received 2.5 pecks. On the Conglass side list, there were no McPhersons. Several McPhersons were on the Tomintoul list.
Paul MacPherson was recorded on 6 June 1841 census in 54 Gerrard St, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire. He (or possibly his brother Peter) is probably the P McPerson [sic], living with the George Gordon family. They are listed as P aged 23, book seller, Ann aged 17, James 14, Margt 5, Isa 11, none born in the county. The building was also shared with the McDonald family.
Paul MacPherson was not found in the 1841 census. He was not at Kirkmichael nor were his parents, but I have not found them in the 1841 census for Aberdeen. They were possibly at Rothes..
Paul MacPherson married Jane Emslie, daughter of John Emslie and Jane Stephen, on 12 September 1844 in St Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Paul McPherson, merchant in Aberdeen & Jane Emslie, daughter of John Emslie, coppersmith in Aberdeen by the Rev. John Stephen, minister in Aberdeen, in the presence of the said John Emslie and Peter McPherson, hatter in Aberdeen.
Paul MacPherson and Jane Emslie arrived per "Waverley" on 20 December 1848 at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, from Plymouth 3rd September 1848, carrying assisted passengers. Paul McPherson, 30, farm labourer, of Blackhouse, Banffshire; son of Alexander & Anne; wife Jane McPherson, 22, dressmaker, born Aberdeen, daughter of John & Jane Hemsley, living in Aberdeen; Margaret (sister) 13, born Blackhouse, no parents given; Jane 3 & Margaret 1 1/2 both born Aberdeen.
Paul was a labourer of Menangle Rd, Picton at his daughter Mary Ann's Church of England baptism 8 March 1851. By his daughter Jannet Belgowan's Wesleyan baptism on the 19 Dec 1852, he was described as a farmer in Picton, New South Wales, between 1851 and 1852.
The Maryborough & Dunolly Advertiser on 29 March 1865 advertised: To the Bench of Magistrates at Carisbrook, in the colony of Victoria, I, Paul McPHERSON, Farmer, of Newmarket, now residing at Newmarket, on the Dunolly road (Tullaroop Shire), iin the Colony of Victoria, do hereby give note notice that it is my intention to APPLY to the Justices sitting at the court of Petty Sessions to be holden at Carisbrook on the fourth day of April for a CERTIFICATE authorising issue of a publican's licence for a house situate on the Donolly Road, known as the Newmarket Hotel, containing two sitting rooms and three bedrooms exclusive of those required for the use of the family. Dated March 16th 1865 (Signed) Paul McPherson. He was licensed to sell beer on 6 February 1866 in Carisbrook.
Paul MacPherson was listed in a directory dated between 1870 and 1871 as P McPherson , farmer at Carisbrook, Victoria. There was also P McPherson of Bet Bet, which is probably his brother Peter.
Paul MacPherson was employed by Joseph Jenkins in his "Diary of a Welsh swagman" states that he was promised more permanent work at a wage of 12s a week by Mr Paul McPherson, a decent Scotsman, at New Market Farm and Hotel, near Carisbrook. Between August and November he describes his work, etc.: he takes hay to town in a waggon drawn by six strong oxen. He erected log fencing at this fine farm of 300 acres, then ploughed a paddock as flat as a pool of water ... plants potatoes and prepares the garden for carrots. People who call here on Sunday get their drinks unlawfully at the back door. Built a calves' sheld and a pig st, walks to Maryborough for necessities. A mob of sheep stop at the farm every Wednesday night on their way to the market at Ballarat. ... I see two sides of life here because it is a public house as well as a farm, and it is common custom in the colony for hoteliers to own an adjoining farm on which swagmen are engaged for a small wage. They are expected to spend this on drinks at the hotel, and course they do this, so the hotelier gives with one hand and takes back with the other. I spent the morning picking peas for market, and hay harvesting in the afternoon. Hundreds of swagmen pass by looking for work. November ... The Master ordered me to unload from the waggon hay which I had just loaded. I was told to come down from the load. I did, and left to collect my swag in spite of appeals from the Master and his family to resume work. I was engaged to mow hay by another hotelier with a farm ... I elected to leave and the parting was amiable. as a farmer and hotelier in July 1871, Carisbrook. He was a hotel keeper in Carisbrook, Victoria, in 1875. He was the informant at the death of Jane Emslie, on 26 July 1875.
The Argus on 16 Feb 1876 reported: George Holton, an apple blight curer at Carisbrook, was arraigned on a charge of indecently assaulting a little child, five years of age, the daughter of a respectable farmer at Newmarket, named Paul Macpherson. The details of the case were most horrible. The prisoner was found guilty, and remanded.
Paul MacPherson was listed in a directory dated between 1884 and 1889 as Paul McPherson, farmer at Carisbrook.
Paul MacPherson made a will dated 24 September 1897 in Carisbrook, Victoria. Paul McPherson of Newmarket, near Carisbrook, farmer - ... The City of Coburg rate book listed Paul McPherson paying rates on land owned by Jane McPherson in the Loch Park Extension Estate, but I believe it is Jane and not Jane Emslie as she was dead by then.
Paul died of bronchitis on 25 February 1898 in Newmarket, Carisbrook, Victoria, Australia. He was buried on 27 February 1898 in Carisbrook.
His will was proved on 21 March 1898 at Victoria.

Paul MacPherson
(circa 1755 - )
Paul died. He was born circa 1755 in Kirkmichael, Banffshire, Scotland. He was probably born about 1756 if he was 21 at his marriage. There are 2 un-named sons born in that period and another with no name and no sex. He is probably the Paul McPherson in Tomachlaggan who had an illegitimate son James baptised in 1774, but he is described as of Blackhaugh by the arrival of his legitimate issue. There was a smithy at Tomachlaggan and there was a track from Tomachlaggan to Blackhaughs. John McPherson of Tomachlaggan had an un-named son in 1762 but if this is Paul, it would mean he was only c.12 when James was born. The illegitimate James moved from Blackhaughs to Tomachlaggan.
The ministers in the Statistical Accounts observe that the registers are deficient and have been transcribed. A 1756 birth makes him exactly contemporary with Abbe Paul McPherson who was the son of a Paul of Inveravon. However there was also a Paul baptised at Kingussie in 1755. He may be a younger son of the McPhersons of Ellick.
In 1687 a Paul McPherson of Knocken is mentioned in a Banff sasine dated 1 Aug 1687, and a Paul McPherson of Towie between 1673 and 1676, he? is described as son of William of Towie in a sasine dated 20 Jan 1670.
Bruce Bishop quoting Gaffney, 1970 states the McPhersons arrived in the parish in the 17th century.
An Alex McPheson of Bellenlon ... [Jn..] paid tax on 2 horses in 1797-1798. On the same page (2) were Adam McPherson, Mains ... with 1 horse and Cosmo McPherson & Geo McPherson, both of Ellick paying for 2 hoses each. Also a John McPherson Blearnamire with 1 horse. On page 3 were John McPherson Fotherletter with 1 horse, John McPheson Findron with 2.
Paul is the first linked member of the McPherson family we can confirm. He farmed at Blackhaugh which appears to be new lands on the Chabet Water.
There was a contemporary Abbe Paul MacPherson (1756-1846) at Salan seminary at neighbouring Braes of Glenlivet. He was sent to Rome on a mission in 1812 by the British government, then imprisoned by Napoleon at Savona. MacPherson's readiness to co-operate helped to bring about the relaxation of the British government's restrictions on Catholics. He returned to Glenlivet in 1820 to build up chapel, presbytery and school. From 1717 to 1799 about 100 priests were trained in the seminary there. He was born at Scalan 4 March 1756, the son of Paul MacPherson and Jean Cumming; arrived at Scots College Rome 8 Feb 1770; for reasons of health, came to Valledolid; ordained a priest by Bishop of Segovia in his private chapel, 6 April 1779 and left for Scotland 21 April 1779; procurator of the Scottish Mission, Rome 1793-98; returned to Rome 1814 and then became the rector of the college there 1820-27 and 1835-46; died in Rome 24 Nov 1846 and buried in college chapel.
In the Muster roll of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's army 1745-6 the following Paul McPhersons are listed in Cluny McPherson's regiment: of Machemill, of Reylahyle, horsekeeper to Cluny. The first two surrendered.
Paul MacPherson married Janet Riach circa 1776 in Banffshire, Scotland.
Paul MacPherson was listed on the rent roll of the Duke of Gordon, in 1785, for property in Blackhaugh, Kirkmichael, Banffshire, Scotland. Cropt 1785: Blackhaugh, no lease, Grassum.
Blackhaugh is located off the main Avonside Road, B9136, from Ballanlish to Croughly. Part of this road forms part of the Tomintoul Spur of the Speyside Way. It now forms part of the Forestry Commission lands with only a path through to Ballanlish.
Paul MacPherson was listed on the rent roll of the Gordon estate, in 1790, for property in Kirkmichael, Banffshire. 1790: Black-haugh, £3/10/- rental, 1 custom wedder, farm.
Paul MacPherson was listed on the rent roll of the Gordon estate, between 1800 and 1801, for property in Blackhaugh, Kirkmichael. He was 1 shilling in arrears.
Paul MacPherson was listed on the rent roll of the Duke of Gordon, in 1802, for property in Kirkmichael. "State of the multures payable by the tenants in Mr Marshall's collection in proportion to their present rents 1802": Paul McPherson, Blackhaugh. £4/10/- rental, Money...
Others were: Alexander McPherson etc. listed at Easter Inverauries, money £40, grassum £160 converted £16, 2 wedders £1.£57 rent, proportion of multures £2/5/11. Paul is listed separately at Blackhaugh.
Paul MacPherson was listed on the rent roll of the Duke of Gordon, in 1809, for property in Kirkmichael. 1809: crop Blackhaugh, rental £7/7/-. Old feus nos.42 & 43 - half tenements each in Tomintoul. Also lot 7 between the service roads South, Tomintoul; Lot next to Foordmouth & St Bridget, held with Miss Goggin. This Probably a different Paul.
