Powered by Translate *. Rev Seawell Heatherly was also known as Heatherley in records. He was born before May 1699 in London. He was the son of William Heatherly.
     Seawell matriculated at Pembroke College, Cambridge University, from 1718 to 1722. He was admitted sizar (aged 19) at Pembroke on 13 May 1718. Son of William, of London, citizen and carpenter. He matriculated in 1717, Grecian, from Christ's Hospital. He gained a BA in 1721/2 and MA in 1725. He was one of the firs Moses' exhibitioners from Christ's Hospital, returned to his old school as headmaster [His name was spelled Heatherly]. Seawell was ordained a deacon at Norwich, Norfolk, in February 1721/22. Seawell was a teacher from 1725 to 1753, at Christ's Hospital School, London. He was appointed an Under master at Christ's Hospital (Blue Coat School) in 1725, Upper Grammar Master in 1737, becoming the Headmaster from 1738-1753. He was a student and exhibitioner there in 1718 and was described as Head Master in 1738. He was described as Rev. Sewell Heatherley, M.A..
     Seawell was registered as Seawelll Heatherley at Pembroke Hall, Cambridge University, on the August 1727 electoral roll.
     Rev Seawell Heatherly married Hester or Esther Beesly circa 17 October 1727 in London.
     He officiated at many marriages at Christ Church (Greyfriars) between 1733 and 1750 using both Heatherly and Heatherley. Rev Seawell Heatherly was widowed on 25 February 1737/38 in Christ Church, Newgate St, (Greyfriars), London, on the death of his wife Hester or Esther Beesly.
     Rev Seawell Heatherly married secondly Elizabeth Unknown (Compton) on 20 July 1746 in St Katherine by the Tower, London. Seawell Heatherly, widower to Elizabeth Compton, widow, licence; licence signed Seawell Heatherly, the bond was £600.
     The Monthly chronologer, or London magazine, or, Gentleman's monthly intelligencer 22 (Jul 1753) p. 337 reported: Tuesday 12: Was held a general court of the governors of Christ's Hospital, for the election of an upper master of the Grammar School, in the room of Rev Mr Heatherly, preferred to the vicarage of Clavering cum Langley in the county of Essex; when the Rev Mr Townley, of the masters of the Merchant-Taylors school, was chosen by a great majority. Seawell was vicar at Clavering, Essex, between 11 July 1753 and 7 April 1762. His name on the honour board in the church is spelled Seawell Heatherley. He was succeeded by James Penn in 1763.
     Seawell died on 5 February 1762 in Clavering, Essex. Deaths: The Rev Mr Heatherly, late grammar-master of Christ's Hospital, at Clavering in Essex. He was buried on 9 February 1762 in St Mary & St Clement, Clavering.
     The administration of his estate was granted in March 1762 at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

'Our's could be the son of either Edward or William, but the naming pattern suggests William & Elizabeth, rather than Edward & Faith. He was the son of William Heatherly and Elizabeth Unknown (Heatherley). William Heatherly was listed as a Freeman of the city of London, on 3 September 1723. He was described as citizen and carpenter of London when his son was admitted to University. The only surviving record which may be him is: William Hatherley, son of William Hatherly, citizen and joyner of London, when he was apprenticed to Joseph Wormell, citizen and joyner, 3 Sep 1723. It was also dated 5 July 1726 - admission?, but he seems too old.
However the 3 sons (John, Joseph & Richard) of William Hetherley, citizen and plasterer of London, were admitted as freeman as legitimate born children after their father's admission to the guild, 26 July 1700.
