James Robertson

     James Robertson was born on 9 August 1833 in Culnamon of Cardross, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. He was christened on 9 August 1833 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire. He was the son of John Robertson and Elisabeth MacIntosh.
     James Robertson appeared on the 1841 census in the household of John Robertson and Elisabeth MacIntosh in Colleymun Moss settlers, Port of Menteith.
     James Robertson was recorded on the 1851 census in Blarsassenach, Port of Menteith, Perthshire. He was not with his parents but at Blarsassenach nearby, aged 17, unmarried, born Pt of Menteith, as a farm servant in the household of Henry & Agnes Dougall, farmer of 270 acres.
     James Robertson arrived per "Meteor" in December 1858 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, from Liverpool, departing 17 September 1858. James was described as an English speaking, 24 year old farmer.
     James Robertson married Mary Ann MacPherson, daughter of Paul MacPherson and Jane Emslie, on 7 April 1869 in Newmarket, near Avoca, Victoria, Australia. They were married as Presybterians by licence with the consent of her father, her sister Jessie was witness along with William Byers. James was a farmservant of Wareek at the time. James Robertson witnessed Robert Allan's burial on 22 September 1874 in Maryborough.
On 15 September 1875 James Robertson purchased property in Eddington, Victoria, on 15 September 1875. The l79 acres of land was transferred to David Dalgety Simson on 6 July 1877.
     James was a defendant in a court case on 19 December 1888 in Maryborough, Victoria. Maryborough Court of Petty Sessions: Robertson, James: neglect to send child to school, at Maryborough court, 19 Dec 1888.
     At the Maryborough Court, a James Robinson, was fined for cutting timber under size, 27 Jul 1890, paid 58/90. A James Robertson/Robinson was fined for being drunk and disorderly on 10 July & 14 August 1893, 12 February and 23 April 1894. He was admitted to the hospital, Maryborough, between 1892 and 1904. He was admitted onl 27 Feb 1892, aged 60, miner of Maryborough, port of embarkation Liverpool, ship - Meteor, 37 years in colony, married, Presbyterian, native of Perthshire. He was again admitted 8 May 1899, also 7 April 1902, aged 68, railway employee, port of embarkation Glasgow, ship Metox, 43 years in colony, and again admitted 30 Jan 1904, aged 70, miner, 45 years in the colony.
     On October 22 1903 James Robertson was fined for a wandering cow. He is also possibly the James Robertson who was convicted of unlawful assault there on 14 Nov 1907, although he seems a little old.
     James was a defendant in a court case on 14 November 1907 in Maryborough, Victoria. He or his son was convicted of unlawfull assault - more likely his son as he would have been 74.
     James was registered as James Robertson, pensioner at Tullaroop Rd, Maryborough, Victoria, on the 1908 electoral roll.
     James was registered as James Robertson at Tullaroop Rd, Maryborough, on the 1912 electoral roll. There were 2 James Robertsons at that address, one was a miner the other had no occupation, presumably father and son.
     James was a defendant in a court case in 1917 in Maryborough. On 27 Feb 1917, he was convicted for taking a seat in a railway carriage without a ticket. On Oct 15 1917 James Robertson was fined for being unlawfully on licenced premises. These events may refer to his son James.
     James died of old age & influenza on 24 October 1917 in Tullaroop Rd, Maryborough, Victoria, Australia, aged 84. Labourer, aged 84, born Scotland, 60 years in Victoria. In a croft with 5 windowed rooms on the night of the census were John Robertson, head, married, aged 60 crofter, employer, born at Pt of Menteith, his wife Helen aged 55, born St Ninians; Annie Ramsay their married daughter & visitor, 22, born Kippen, their son William Roberton, aged 13 plus three boarders who were lunatics..
     John died of senile decay on 8 September 1919 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, aged 88. His obituary in the Stirling Observer stated: The late Mr John Robertson. The death of Mr John Robertson, farmer, Collymoon, which took place on Monday last week, removes one of the oldest residenters from the district. Mr Robertson, who had reached the age of 90 years was a native of the Port, and succeeded his father on the farm of which the deceased and his forebears were tenants on the Cardross Estate for a long period. Collymoon farm is adjacent to the Moss, and Mr Robertson did a good deal in the casting of peats which he supplied in the district & also forwarded to the distilleries where they were largely used. Deceased was an industrious, hard working man & highly esteemed. He was predeceased by his wife some years ago, and is survived by a grown up family. He was buried after 8 September 1919 in Port of Menteith. There is a monumental inscription Port of Menteith churchyard overlooking the lake. In Loving Memory of John Robertson who died at Collymoon 8 Sep 1919 aged 90 years and Helen McGregor his wife died 30 July 1916 aged 84 years. Also their children James 1 year, Helen 5 years. Also their grandson Pte. David McKay 16th Royal Warwickshires, killed in action 27 Sep 1918 aged 19 years.
     His will was proved on 28 October 1919 at Perth. John Robertson, Collymoon, Port of Monteith, Perthshire, died 8 Sep 1919 at same place, testate.      John Robertson was born in 1870 in Maryborough, Victoria. He was the son of James Robertson and Mary Ann MacPherson. John Robertson was admitted to the hospital, Maryborough, on 25 December 1879. On admission he was aged 9, of Maryborough, Presbyterian, accident, native of Bet Bet.
     John died on 17 February 1893 in the hospital, Maryborough, Victoria. He was admitted to Maryborough Hospital on the 13th and described as aged 22, labourer of Maryborough, native of Wareek. He was buried after 17 February 1893 in grave no. 1948, Maryborough.
