He built Bullhouse stables in 1688 & the chapel in 1692 and was buried there with his wife. 3 adjacent graves in the chapel record his children's death. The Dissenters' Chapel of Bullhouse is said to be the oldest independent non-conformist chapel with continuous worship in the country. Or "... in the County of York". It lies a mile or so from Penistone, just beyond Millhouse Green and near to a lone wind turbine of the modern age. It began as a Presbyterian meeting house after the Act of Toleration allowed non-conformist worship in 1689. The date over the door is 18th April 1692 and the wear on its steps is true testament to its years of use. At the time of the English Civil War, Captain William Rich served in the Parliamentary Army. His son Sylvanus Rich built most of Bullhouse Hall in 1655, in what was then a secluded wooded area. Around 1647, Rev Christopher Dickinson became Vicar of Penistone Parish. it was remarked in the diary of Captain Adam Eyre of Hazlehead, that: '... upon the removal of Sir Francis Wortley's garrison from Penistone and during the tymes of trouble, hee intrudeth himself into the Ministery at Penistone'. Other diary entries also suggested that Dickinson was not well received in the Parish. This was not to last long. He was followed around 1649 by the popular Rev Henry Swift, who preached in a simple, puritan style for the next 40 years. Henry had not been presented 'By any real or supposed patron' but by the choice of the inhabitants of the Parish. Torre’s Collections describes Henry as having ‘Come in by the usurped powers and consent of the parish’. But Henry was his own man. Following the 1660 restoration of the monarchy of Charles II, in 1662 an 'Act of Uniformity' required all ministers to swear an oath to give: 'Unfeigned assent and consent to all and everything contained and prescribed' in the new Book of Common Prayer, which many people would never have seen before. The Rev Henry Swift continued as before and refused to comply. As a result, he was no stranger to York jail but he had some protection by landed families in the area from the 'The Great Ejection' of 1662. It caused hundreds of Puritan preachers to be persecuted, removed from churches and lose their income. The 1672 'Act of Toleration' gave some relief from this persecution and it became possible for Dissenters to meet in registered meeting places. Sylvanus Rich registered Bullhouse Hall as a place of worship. Henry stayed on as vicar after the Reformation, despite continuing to be non-conformist. By the time of his death in 1689, it had become possible for non-conformists to meet where and when they liked. Rev Henry Swift (1621-1689) was interred in Penistone churchyard near the West door. Not liking the new Vicar, whose style was more ritualistic and compliant, Elkanah Rich chose to build Bullhouse Chapel and install a minister of a more suitable character. On 18th April 1692, Bullhouse Chapel opened as a place of worship. The Rev David Denton was the first minister to serve here. For such a small chapel, it is interesting that its congregation in 1715 was 200 people..      
Elkanah Rich paid land tax from 1692 in Penistone, Yorkshire. The land tax assessments list Mr Elkanah Rich paying £6/13/0 at Thurlstone in 1692, Mr Rich paying £10/0/6 there in 1693, paying £1/2/0 at Penistone from 1707-1712, at Thurleston Elkanah Rich gent paid in 1707 £13/9/0, 1710-12 £13/4/6. In 1723 Elkanah, gent paid £6/12/3, but by 1728 Amor, Esq. paid £9/18/4 for property at Thurlestone and Mr Rich paid 4/8 and 7/10 for property at Penistone.
He was a petitioner in Penistone, YKS, on 24 August 1699. On 1 May 1712 Elkanah Rich leased property in Penistone, Yorkshire. Lease in trust and counterpart. Elkanah Rich of Bulhouse, John Hatfield of Laughton in the Morving and Mary his wife, to Daniel Denton of Bullhouse and James ffieldsend of the same. 2 messauges and several closes in Penistone called, 2 doles in Otliffe Field, the Pingle, the Hesletoft, the Acre, the ffar Hill Royd, Nether Hill Royd, Upper Hill Royd, Wheat Close, the Rood, the Hasletofts, the Holme, the Acre, the Croft, 2 doles in the East-field, Upper Eastfield, Middle Eastfield, Lower Eastfield, Ashfield, Town Royd, Broomfield, Upper close, Rough Nooke, the Acre and the Highfield for 999 years at a yearly rent of £21 to be paid to Elkanah Rich during his life and John and Mary Hatfield and their heirs after his death. .
Deed dated 28 may 1719, leading to the uses of a fine re messuages, lands, and premises in Thornhill, Bowling, Little Horton, Kirkburton, Mirfield and Hipperholme.

He wrote in a letter to his cousin Aymer Riche of Smallshaw respecting a pew in the church: "My father, my mother & myself always sat there in Mr Swift's time, that is, while we went to the church; until they carried things so high, and were so full of ceremonies, that we resolved to provide a better way of worship at home. I shall therefore not sit there as they manage the church, but if you like their doings I had rather you sat there than any other person." 8 July 1720.
In 1721 he wrote two letters to his cousin John Haigh of Shye regarding the maintenance of the minister of the chapel, in March he mentioned that he had many children to maintain, considerable sums to pay upon the marriage of my daughters and had been at near two thousand pounds charge in building.
His son Aymer Rich continued to attend this chapel, and was buried there. The Ministers were of the presbyterian denomination. The first was Daniel Denton who died 1721, next William Halliday d.1741, Benjamin Shaw d.1771 & Thomas Halliday who settled there in 1772 and removed in 1776 to Norton, Derbyshire. Mr Lewis was afterwards Minister but the family ceasing to reside at the hall the attendance at the chapel became much diminished. At length regular worship ceased and the chapel was allowed to be used by some denominations of Methodists.
He is probably the Mr Rich who paid Peniston manor copyhold rent to Capt Bosville in 1722 "For Mr Rich, for Hesle-tofts 10d".
     Elkanah died on 21 July 1724 in Penistone, YKS. He was buried on 24 July 1724 in Bullhouse chapel, Thurlstone, Penistone. Monumental inscription: Also the body of Elkanah Rich Esq. He died July y 24th A.D. 1724 in the 65th year of his age. This building was erected by the said Elkanah Rich A.D. 1692.

     Elkanah Rich was born on 27 March 1695 in Yorkshire, England. He was the son of Elkanah Rich and Martha Thorpe.
